Marie Van Brittan Brown Innovates Home Security So We Raise Our Glass!

At Stoney Wines, we believe in celebrating individuals who have made the world a better, safer & more innovative place. This February, as we honor Black History Month, we raise our glass to Marie Van Brittan Brown, a trailblazer whose ingenuity continues to impact lives today.

Marie Van Brittan Brown was not just a visionary; she was a problem-solver. Living in Queens, New York, in the 1960s, Marie worked as a nurse and often found herself home alone at odd hours. Concerned about her safety and frustrated by the slow police response times in her neighborhood, she set out to create something revolutionary: the first home security system.

Together with her husband, Albert Brown, an electronics technician, Marie developed a system that combined a motorized camera, two-way microphones, and a monitor. Their design allowed homeowners to see and communicate with whoever was at the door without opening it. The system even included an option to remotely unlock the door or contact law enforcement. In 1966, the couple filed a patent for their invention, and it became the blueprint for modern home security systems.

Marie’s innovation was ahead of its time and deeply impactful. Her invention paved the way for video surveillance systems, intercoms, and smart home security solutions that are now common in homes and businesses worldwide. The Browns' patent was cited in dozens of later patents, highlighting its foundational importance in the security industry.

Beyond her invention, Marie Van Brittan Brown’s story is a testament to the power of creativity and determination. She turned a personal challenge into a groundbreaking solution that has helped millions feel safer in their homes. Her legacy serves as a reminder that even small ideas can have a big impact.

As we pour a glass of Stoney Wines this month, we invite you to join us in honoring Marie Van Brittan Brown. Her brilliance and courage inspire us to think boldly and act with purpose, no matter the challenges we face.

🥂 Here’s to Marie, a true innovator and a pioneer of safety. Cheers to her legacy and the many lives she’s touched.
