Dr. Gladys West Helps the World Find Its Way So We Raise Our Glass!
At Stoney Wines, we love celebrating people who have changed the way we live. As we reflect on the innovators who have shaped our world, we raise our glass to Dr. Gladys West—a mathematician whose work helped create GPS, a technology we rely on every day.
Dr. Gladys West grew up in rural Virginia in the 1930s, where opportunities for Black women in science were almost nonexistent. But she had a sharp mind and a drive to succeed. She earned a scholarship to Virginia State College and studied mathematics—one of the toughest fields out there.
Her skills took her to the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory in the 1950s, where she was one of only a few Black employees and one of the only women. She worked with cutting-edge computers and complex calculations, laying the foundation for something that would change the world.
Dr. West didn’t invent GPS by herself, but her research made it possible. She worked on satellite models that measured the shape of the Earth with incredible accuracy. This data became the backbone of the Global Positioning System (GPS).
Think about it—every time you check directions, track a run, or even order food, you’re using a system built on her work. GPS has transformed industries like transportation, emergency response, and even farming. It’s hard to imagine life without it.
Dr. Gladys West’s contributions were unrecognized for decades. But in 2018, she was finally honored for her role in developing GPS. She was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame—long overdue recognition for her brilliance.
Her story is one of perseverance, intelligence, and groundbreaking achievement. She proved that Black women belong in STEM and that their work shapes the future.
As we pour a glass of Stoney Wines this month, we toast to Dr. Gladys West. Her impact is everywhere—helping us find our way, explore new places, and connect with the world.
🥂 Here’s to Dr. West, a pioneer in science and technology. Cheers to her lasting legacy!
