At Stoney Wines, we believe in celebrating individuals who have made the world a better, stronger, and more inspiring place. This week we raise our glass to Ora Washington, a trailblazer whose athletic dominance changed the game.

Ora Washington wasn’t just good—she was unstoppable. In the 1920s and ’30s, she ruled both basketball and tennis, winning eight consecutive national tennis titles in the American Tennis Association (ATA) before leading the Philadelphia Tribunes to multiple basketball championships. She excelled in two sports at a time when opportunities for Black women in athletics were nearly nonexistent.

But, despite her dominance, Ora never got the recognition she deserved. Tennis officials refused to let her compete against white players, keeping her out of the most prestigious tournaments. Sports history books often overlooked her contributions. Still, she kept playing, kept winning, and kept proving she was one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Her legacy lives on in every Black woman excelling in basketball and tennis today. She broke barriers, shattered records, and set the stage for future generations. Even if the world didn’t give her the spotlight she earned, we will.
