This week we raise our glass to Lubaina Himid, a visionary artist who has been chosen to represent the UK at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Her work sheds light on overlooked historical figures and boldly confronts Britain’s colonial past.

Lubaina’s art is more than just visually striking—it’s a form of activism. She uses her talent to tell stories that have long been ignored, highlighting the contributions of Black British communities and exposing histories that many would rather forget. Her paintings, installations, and prints give a voice to those who have been left out of the narrative, demanding that we pay attention.

Born in Zanzibar and raised in the UK, Lubaina found her calling in the 1980s as part of the British Black Arts Movement. At a time when representation was scarce, she pushed back, creating space for Black artists and curating exhibitions that put their work in the spotlight. Her dedication to shifting the cultural landscape earned her the Turner Prize in 2017, making her the first Black woman to win the prestigious award.
